Package Overview:
Six days, three different moods of the mountains — and enough time to let each one sink in.
Your trip starts off gently with Shimla. Shimla has a rich history that was further decorated by the British Raj in India. It became popular throughout India as it was made the summer capital of the British Raj during the pre-independance era. The summer heat of the plains of Northern India and Delhi was too much for the Britishers to live in and they used to flock to Shimla when it got unbearable in the plains. Shimla still carries that old-world colonial charm in its ridge-top walks, beautifully constructed buildings, and winding lanes, with the Himalayas appearing now and then on the horizon between the trees when the weather clears. On this trip, you’ll wander along Mall Road shopping and exploring the local food and the famous Ridge of Shimla, look out from Jakhoo Hill and soak in the vibes of the ancient Jakhoo temple, walk past the quieter centres of the Shimla, and discover that this place is more about settling into and discovering the Himalyan rhythm than ticking off tourist places from a list. Shimla is quintessentially pine-scented, slightly nostalgic, and pleasantly slow – just perfect for travellers visiting from the big Indian cities.
Next, the road drops into the Kullu Valley. Here in Kullu, the mountains feel much closer, and the landscape turns much greener. In Kullu, you will find small rivers running by the side of roads, apple orchards lining the hillside, cafes by the winding roadsides, and small villages dotted between forests and terraced fields. With one night in Kullu, it marks the mid-point of your entire trip, a day to follow the Beas, relax and breathe a little deeper, and watch the scenery around you change with the day without needing to rush towards the next destination.
Next is Manali. Manali is a town with its own unique atmosphere and character. From Sanskrit, its name means “Manu’s abode” and, according to the Hindu epic, is the site of the first human’s settlement. Manu is considered a demigod. There is an ancient temple dedicated to Manu which can be visited by tourists. Manali boasts a valley, taller peaks, and dramatic views of the mountains. If you feel a bit adventurous, you can take on some of the beautiful trekking routes around Old Manali. If you feel like hiking, you can amble past the old deodar forests listening to the birds chirping. If you want to visit a temple, visit the ancient Hadimba Devi temple in Manali. Of course, you can also spend some afternoons relaxing at and taking in the beauty of the Beas River. You can enjoy the traditional rural modesty of the village and the setting. Manali is built across three hills with ancient temples, and distinct ancient villages. If the weather permits, you can drive up to Solang Valley or Rohtang Pass and enjoy the snowfall over there. Do keep in mind that a visit to Rohtang Pass requires a permit. In these places near Manali, the landscape beautifully changes from lush greenery to fresh snow.
Six days, five nights, three valleys, old colonial streets, ancient churches, temples, rushing rivers and high Himalayan air. This itinerary moves forward, but just at the right pace. There’s enough road between the destinations to watch the mountains change their various moods – and enough time spent in each place to forget you ever were on a schedule.
