Package Overview:
This is a small trip with big views. The kind of trip you do slowly, with time built in to do nothing at all.
Dalhousie sets the tone for the beginning of our trip. It’s a quaint hill station the British built, which time has completely forgotten. The colonial town of Dalhousie is spread across the five wooded hills, where colonial-era cottages sit tucked among the deodars and the mist enters whenever it pleases. On this trip, you will have the chance to walk the Gandhi Chowk and the Mall, follow quiet forest paths to Subhash Baoli and Panchpula, watch the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas float on the horizon on a clear day, and feel the unhurried green calm of the town work on soothing your nerves faster than you’d expect. Dalhousie is a charming old place like no other, that slows you down to its pace – cool, wooded and softly colonial.
Then you drive up to Khajjiar, where the landscape unfolds all at once, like a tightly held breath. The locals call Khajjiar the Switzerland of India, and the comparison can be considered quite legitimate – a wide emerald meadow surrounded by thick deodar forest, a small lake at its heart, wild horses grazing, and snow-capped peaks watching over from the horizon. Staying the night at Khajjiar is the entire point of the trip – the day visitors leave by evening, the meadow empties, and then you have Khajjiar the way it’s meant to be experienced – still, silent and green under a sky full of stars.
Four days, a graceful old hill station and a meadow that steals the show, and enough time between them to forget what day it is. And that’s the entire plan.
Important Notes
- Ensure you stay hydrated and that you take your first day in the mountains a little easy to acclimatise properly.
- If you are visiting the mountains during the summer, carry some loose cotton clothing as well; it can get sunny at noon. At the same time, evenings and nights can get chilly, so pack layered clothing for when it gets cold.
- Carry a pair of sunglasses, a hat or cap, lip balm, and adequate sunscreen
- Ensure you carry a jacket and a pair of sports shoes.
- Mountain roads feature sharp hairpin bends. Keep anti-nausea medication handy for long mountain drives.
